Wildlife and Eco-Systems

Interested in nature, the great outdoors, wildlife, and what creatures inhabit our lands and waters here in Corolla? Then you will truly enjoy a visit to Currituck Heritage Park! Stroll the park, sit back and relax, grab a camera and your binoculars and get ready to spot some beautiful wildlife here in the park. Ducks, geese, Osprey and many other types of birds abound. In early spring, if you hang out near one of the canals, you might just catch a glimpse or two of the carp frolicking in the water as is part of their mating ritual. Stick around long enough and you’ll see park patrons netting some crabs – which could make for a tasty supper!

Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education

Visit the Wildlife Education Center and check out the awesome exhibits, including a large decoy collection and an 8000 gallon exhibit representing the conditions above and below the Currituck sound. View the short film showing in the auditorium, or register for any of the free programs or classes offered for both children and adults. Visit the gift shop for some unique souvenirs.

There is NO admission fee to enter the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education. Donations are accepted.

Fishing & Crabbing

Located on Currituck Sound, the park has many water related activities, such as fishing and crabbing. Visitors are welcome to bring their rods n’ reels and nets, sit back and enjoy the day while waiting to catch one! Please note that there is NO fee for fishing nor crabbing, however the State of North Carolina requires a license for fishing and for crabbing (age dependent). Please contact the Wildlife Education Center for more information.

Interpretive Trail

Print out our online map and explore the Interpretive Trail. This wonderful trail takes the visitor around the park, down the Nature Boardwalk and through parts of Historic Corolla Village adjacent to the northern park exit. See and read over 20 markers– covering history of the property (the Knights, the Whalehead Club, Solid Rocket Fuel testing, Corolla School House, etc.), as well as Natural Habitats and Wildlife. There is no fee associated with the Interpretive Trail.
