Upcoming Events at Currituck Heritage Park / 2009 

JUNE 24 & 25th - ARTS FESTIVAL - 8th Annual "Under the Oaks" Arts Festival - Wednesday from 10 to 6 pm and Thursday from 10 to 5 pm; $5 parking donation - Enjoy a huge outdoor art show on the waterfront grounds of Currituck Heritage Park.  This show features the unique talents of over 100 quality artists amid musical entertainment, food, an art auction, and children's activities.  Admission is free!

JUNE 30th - RAFFLE DRAWING - Tuesday at 2 pm - Raffle of "Return to Whalehead', a limited edition museum quality remarque - No need to be present to win!  Raffle details or visit the museum shop to buy tickets now!

JULY 4th - FIREWORKS FESTIVAL - 17th Annual Fireworks Festival-  Saturday, 5 pm until ? - Free Admission -Fireworks begin at dusk but arrive early to enjoy food, music and find a place for your blankets and chairs to settle in for the best fireworks on the Outer Banks!  Sponsored by the Currituck County Department of Travel and TourismDue to Fireworks display, the boat ramp at Currituck Heritage Park will be closed Saturday, July 4, 2009.

JULY 7th, 8th & 9th - WILD HORSE DAYSTuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - Come celebrate with the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, the presence and significance of the wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs living on the Currituck Outer Banks for nearly 500 years.  This year's theme is "Horses Helping Horses" and features dressage, jumping, and wild horse training demonstrations.  There will be food, music, games and crafts, Dunk a Deputy dunking booth!  Enjoy cart rides pulled by a "formerly wild" mustang - Call 252-453-8002 for more information.   

JULY & AUGUST - CHILDREN'S KNIGHT MAGIC - Tuesday mornings at 9 am kids (ages 5 and up) explore the history of magic and learn a few tricks to show off to friends!  $15 per child to delve into the mystery of illusion by world traveled magician, Clive Allen.  Watch your child's confidence grow as he or she learns to perform tricks at home!  Meet at the Picnic Shelter in Currituck Heritage Park!

JULY, AUGUST, & SEPTEMBER - WINE FESTIVALS - Every Wednesday afternoon, 3 to 7 pm - Whalehead Club Wednesday Wine Festivals.  Come and celebrate the interesting world of wines! All wine connoisseurs and novices are welcome!  Enjoy a Wednesday afternoon of wine tasting under the tents on the North Lawn of the Whalehead Club at Currituck Heritage Park.  With your $20 admission adults can sample wines from North Carolina and around the world; keep your souvenir glass; take a complimentary tour of the Whalehead Club; listen to popular local musical artists perform on the stage; sample food from local vendors.  Children are also welcome at no charge.  Bring your pets on a leash.  Parking is free.

JULY & AUGUST - SUMMER CONCERT SERIES- Every Thursday evening at 6:30 pm on the South Lawn.  Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy local talent and incredible sunsets on the front lawn of the Whalehead Club at Currituck Heritage Park.  Snack concessions available; leashed pets welcome.  Admission and parking are free. 

OCTOBER 30th - HAUNTED COROLLA VILLAGE Friday, 6:30 to 9 pm  - 6th Annual Haunted Corolla Village.  Come and join us for a ghoulishly good time!  Jump on board the Haunted Hayride through Historic Corolla Village and listen to ghostly stories of yesteryear!  Then, if you dare, walk the spooky park grounds and be prepared to be scared!

NOVEMBER 10th & DECEMBER 8th - WINTER EDUCATIONAL SERIESTuesdays at 11 amCheck back -Seminar details will be posted here as soon they become available.  This is the first of four in a series of 2009 / 2010 lectures presented by the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, the Wild Horse Fund, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, and the Whalehead Club.  Mark the dates and plan to attend! 

NOVEMBER 27th - BLACK FRIDAY PORCH SALE - Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.  Enjoy once-a-year deep discounts and select unique items that reflect the history and heritage of the northern Outer Banks!  Yes, even the Copper Collection will be discounted for the whole day!  Enjoy live music while you shop and be among the first to see the 2009 holiday decorations inspired by Mr. Knight's etchings from the 1920s.  Take care of your shopping needs and come away feeling festive not frazzled this holdiay season! 

DECEMBER 12th - HOLIDAY ILLUMINATION CELEBRATION - Saturday, 5 pm - The 3rd Annual Holiday Illumination Celebration begin by gathering on the North Lawn at the giant cedar tree to see it, along with the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, simultaneously illuminated for the holidays!  Enjoy hot chocolate and seasonal carols.  The Whalehead Club will be open for holiday tours to showcase the decorations inspired by the 1920s etchings of Edward Collings Knight, Jr. both before and after the Illumination. 

2009 Events Already Held Included:

JANUARY 13th - WINTER EDUCATIONAL SERIES - Tuesday, 11 am - Sponsored by Harris Teeter - The presentation was on Tiffany Glass by Gary Baker, the renowned former Curator of Glass at the Chrysler Museum of Norfolk, VA.  Baker presented a program on Louis Comfort Tiffany whose contribution to the Art Nouveau movement was highlighted through beautiful examples of his work in the Whalehead Club.  In addition, he helped identify pieces of glass & silver brought in by guests.  Lunch was served and donations were appreciated.  This  

FEBRUARY 10th - WINTER EDUCATIONAL SERIES - Tuesday, 11 am - Sponsored by NC Humanities Council - STORYTELLING:  Pass it on through Oral Histories at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, - Guests came having read "To Illuminate the Dark Space", oral histories of the keepers of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.  Tours of the Keepers' house were given and storyteller Sylvia Payne was guest speaker.  Lunch was served and donations were appreciated. 

MARCH 7th - COROLLA ISLAND EPICUREAN EVENING AT PINE ISLAND HUNT CLUB -Saturday at 4 pmAn intimate evening inside the private working hunt club at Pine Island was shared by those who held tickets.  They experienced the sporting heritage of Currituck County with a traditional five-course hunt club dinner reminiscent of the 1920s waterfowl hunting era.  An auction of rare treasures was held in support of ongoing preservation of the Whalehead Club. 

APRIL 10th - EASTER EGG-STRAVAGANZA - Friday, 1 to 3 pm - It was the Easter Bunny and the Currituck Duck enjoying children who gathered for a traditional egg hunt.  Animal Petting Zoo; Balloon Art; Face Painting; Egg & Spoon Races; Bean Bag Toss; Jellybean Counting Contest; Bake Sale & Refreshments; Fabulous Prizes!  Admission & Parking were free. 

MAY 10th - FUN FLY FESTIVAL - Sunday,10 to 3 pm - Visitors watched and learned how to fly all kinds of kites! Children enjoyed making paper kites to keep or brought their own.  It was held on Mother's Day as a treat for Mom and the whole family.  Admission & Parking were free.


The Whalehead Club at Currituck Herit age Park is located in Corolla, NC.  Approximately 22 miles north of the Wright Memorial Bridge.   Follow Route 12 North. The Currituck Heritage Park entrance is just past Milepost 11.5 on the left!
